Located on the Canadian Shield, the Municipality of Whitestone is a sparsely populated area with many lakes and rocky shorelines, dominated by white pine trees. These features, together with its proximity to southern Ontario make the area an appealing recreation and retirement community. The Central Parry Sound District Restructuring Commission ordered the formation of the Municipality of Whitestone in 2000, and united Hagerman Township with the geographic townships of Burton, East Burpee, McKenzie, Ferrie and part of the geographic township of Croft all located in the central area of the Parry Sound District. Visitors can access Whitestone by two Trans-Provincial Highway corridors from the south: Highway 11 and Highway 400. Whitestone is located between and connected to these two corridors by east-west Highway 124. It has a small year round population, a large proportion of seasonal residents, and a small assessment. The Municipality of Whitestone derives eighty percent of its tax revenue from seasonal land owners. In addition, eighty percent of Whitestone is Crown land, including two Provincial Parks and several Conservation Reserves. Read the Official Plan for more information.
Commercial & Industrial Tax Review
The Community & Economic Development Committee's mandate is to generate new ideas and explore new innovations in order to create economic growth, which will enable our Municipality to increase its infrastructure at low costs, as well as generate revenue. This revenue will help offset current taxes while realizing that development should not have a negative impact on current business establishments. The Community & Economic Development Committee further supports the Assessment Review Committee's recommendation about making the Commercial / Industrial Tax Rate the same as the Residential Tax Rate to help promote business growth and expansion. We are all committed to helping this beautiful and vibrant community continue to grow and move forward!
